“Music can lift us out of depression or move us to tears - it is a remedy, a tonic, orange juice for the ear. But for many of my neurological patients, music is even more - it can provide access, even when no medication can, to movement, to speech, to life. For them, music is not a luxury, but a necessity.”

Star Wars and Chipmunks

McVeigh uses almonds to gain the trust of the chipmunks that live in his backyard. Then he photographs them playing with Star Wars action figures. Not sure it gets much better than this! [Via]

What’s Next for Philanthropy: Acting Bigger and Adapting Better in a Networked World
Funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, What’s Next for Philanthropy argues that while the cutting edge of philanthropic innovation over the last decade has been mostly about improving the effectiveness, efficiency, and responsiveness of individual organizations, the next practices of the coming 10 years will have to build on those efforts to include an additional focus on coordination and adaption — acting bigger and adapting better.

Stefan Sagmeister Self-confidence Produces Fine Results
Give Stefan Sagmeister 10,000 bananas and some glue, and he’ll give you a giant Banana Wall, part of an art installation on Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far exhibition. Titled Self-confidence Produces Fine Results, the Banana Wall is made of real bananas stacked up in a giant wall at Deitch Gallery. In the Banana Wall, Sagmeister used green bananas to create the motto: Self-confidence Produces Fine Results and ripe banana as the background. The interesting thing about this installation is that it changes over time. As the bananas ripen further, the motto will disappear and the background become brownish-yellow. The bananas gradually decay over 24 days of the exhibition.
